Wipers
Next in the list of absolutely essential recordings is this box set containing the first three Wipers albums, and an EP from the time period, remastered and re-released in 2001. Included are 1979's "Is This Real?", the "Alien Boy" EP from 1980, "Youth of America" from 1981 and "Over the Edge" from 1983, which represent some of the most divergent and influential recordings in rock history. Along with all the recordings listed above, the collection offers 23 bonus songs, 6 songs of which had never been released, and liner notes written by the mastermind behind the Wipers, Greg Sage.

Dogmatics
The Dogmatics "1981-'86" is a twenty song disc, which compiles almost everything the band ever released. Though the music is quite accessible to anyone who enjoys rock music, the band deserves its punk credentials. They played high energy, garage rock, but the quality of their recordings is quite clean in comparison to many of the bands in the Boston scene at the time.
I was lucky enough to catch one of the last performances of the Dogmatics back in 1986. They played the "Filling Station" in Bozeman, Montana, then continued on their tour. A few weeks later we heard Paul O'Halloran had died in a motorcycle accident.
They were such an energetic bunch, on stage and off, and didn't mind being harassed by our little group of drunk fans.

Ramones
There really is no one else who could play 28 songs in 48 minutes, in front of a live audience, and make it sound so great. This recording captures the intensity of a Ramones concert with a surprisingly high quality recording. I'm biased, but this is the greatest recording of a live show ever by the greatest band to ever walk the face of the Earth. This is where your music collection should begin.

Clash
The Clash were one of the most accessible of the early punk bands, which allowed them some minor flirtation with super stardom. "From Here to Eternity" is a collection of their songs, recorded between 1978 and 1982, meshed together to emulate a real concert. It works for me, but there are sometimes noticeable differences in the quality of the recordings. Overall, though, this is another "must have" for any rock collection.

Stiff Little Fingers
The boys from Belfast are at it again! They are continuing their touring in 2011, while writing material for a new album! I'm hoping they retain their signature style of aggressive hooks and meaningful political lyrics. I've said, a hundred times, that "Suspect Device" is the ultimate political song...the guitar grabs you, then Jake Burns vocals pull you the rest of the way into the truth about our wretched lives under the thumb of our oppressors...with a solution!
They are pioneers of punk, among the first crop, and the sheer brilliance of their "Inflammable Material" LP is undiminished after 30 years.

The Joneses
The Joneses were one of my favorite BYO bands. Their style was an amalgamation of SoCal punk and the New York Dolls. I first heard them on the BYO compilation LP, Somebody Got Their Head Kicked In, which was re-released as Someone's Gonna Get Their Head To Believe In Something in 1994. Finally, in 2009, they re-issues Criminal History Revisited, on the Full Breach Kicks label.

Killing Joke
A few days ago, I received 12 mp3 files from the new Killing Joke album, “Absolute Dissent”. My initial reaction, after dropping into each song for about 45 seconds, was disappointment. My listening habits over the past few months have been shaped by submerging myself in Blip.fm, always looking for the quickest way to another great punk track…which is exactly the WRONG way to hear this album.
So, I gave it another chance, deciding to listen to it as a whole, and in order, rather than looking for the standout track.
I’ve probably heard this album five times now, and I’ll admit it’s growing on me. I think my disappointment came from expecting to hear the Killing Joke of my youth, frozen in time and full of rage. As much as I wanted Killing Joke to be the band they were 30 years ago, I find they have grown. What I hear in this material is maturation…of the band as individuals, of musicianship, of ideology and spirituality.
Yet, this is immediately recognizable as Killing Joke. I can still hear the original intent of the band, although this is decidedly more metal than an album like “What’s this for…?” While the sound is much cleaner and bigger, there is still a sparse depth, which I have always found to be a defining characteristic of Killing Joke. The anger of the past has been refined and directed at the very power structure we’re forced to live under.
Where others might hear this album as a frenetic whirl of conspiracy fueled paranoia, I find a healthy distrust of those who have led the world into its current chaos. The underlying message is as dark as the sound, but, as the title suggests, this is no time to give up. To rise up again and again after suffering defeat and loss is the strongest theme of this work and the band that created it.
I have been given permission by the distributor to post one mp3 from the album. Of all the tracks on "Absolute Dissent", this is the one that played in my head when I was trying to sleep.
